Fannish 50 Theme:
Favorite Opening Credits (4/10)Fandom: Veronica Mars
Years: 2004-2007 (no, I do NOT count Hulu’s season 4)
Network: UPN/The CW
Theme: “We Used to Be Friends” by Dandy Warhols
The opening credits of Veronica Mars feature noir-inspired visuals and the unforgettable Dandy Warhols track “We Used to Be Friends,” that set the perfect tone for a show packed with mystery, angst, and wit. FANART (mine)
Why I picked these opening credits (click on the arrow to read)
It’s not just the catchy song what makes these opening credits stand out. The grainy snapshots from scenes of the show and the moody lighting make it clear that there’s more to “Veronica Mars” than your average teen drama. It’s a detective story (often touching very deep and difficult themes) with a heroine who’s too smart for her own good and too stubborn to back down.
Evolving with the seasons, they still represent a time capsule of early 2000s cool and the messiness of growing up.
I really miss how TV shows like “Veronica Mars” used to do opening credits; they were a work of art.
And, for a little nostalgia break, let’s look back at that era where opening sequences were mini masterpieces that really worked on setting the mood for the show and inviting you into the story.
I feel like today, with binge-worthy shows on streaming platforms, opening credits are often reduced to a blink-and-you-miss-it title card, and that’s just sad. New generations are truly missing out.
(Only Murders in the Building is a glorious exception to this trend—thank you for keeping the art alive!)
