I've said before that Angel is a fantastical, serialized film noir. It's so dark, both in story and setting, that the scenes in the sunlight are jarring to me. It sticks to the premise of film noir in that the "hero" never wins. Ever. He does the wrong things for the right reasons; he finds himself in inextricable situations that are more often than not of his own doing. He is in a game that he can't quit, can't cheat and can't win. Existentially speaking, it sucks to be Angel, and he knows it.
