Hi All,

As you may have noticed, our Monday editor spot has been passed off between the Sunday and the Tuesday editors for awhile, so we're looking for a permanent correspondent. Being a Herald editor requires 1-3 hours a week for link-gathering and posting -- we have a reading journal which collates links for you so it's super easy! (If you want to look elsewhere for links, that's fine too.) We currently post to Livejournal, Dreamwidth, and Tumblr.

If you're interested, please message <lj user="rahirah") or email rahirah at cox dot net. It's a great way to expand your fannish horizons!

Hi All,

This is just a reminder that the only people who can join the community here are the editors. If you've requested membership, sorry, no can do -- but you can simply watch the community to have its posts show up on your friends list!

However, if you feel a burning desire to post here... it just so happens we are looking for a few good editors! Being a Herald editor requires a commitment of one to three hours a week (depending on how obsessive you are about collecting every single link out there). It's a great way to contribute to fandom, and keep our little corner of it going strong! If you're interested, please PM [livejournal.com profile] rahirah or email me at rahirah at cox dot net.

Hi all,

As you may have noticed, the Herald is looking for a new editor (or editors, we're not fussy.) Our Monday editor is retiring, but the exact day opening up is negotiable; one or two of us are willing to switch.

The time commitment involved is one to three hours per week, depending on how much material is posted on any given day, and how far afield you want to go looking for it. We have AO3 and a number of other sites hooked up to the Herald reading list on LJ via RSS feed, so link-hunting is fairly painless and one-stop, though you are absolutely allowed to look elsewhere if you like. We'll show you the ropes and help out with any questions you have.

Our fandom may be slowing down, but there's life in it yet - and keeping the Herald alive is a great way to contribute! If you're interested, please message me or just reply to this post (comments are screened!)

CORDELIA: So, did you guys fight any demons this summer?

WILLOW: Uh, yes! Our own personal demons.

XANDER: Uh, such as, as, as lust and, uh, thrift!

BUFFY: I would have to go with Stooges also.

CORDELIA: What are you guys talking about? I'm talking about big squiggly demons that came from the ground? Remember? Prom night? With all the vampires.

BUFFY: Cordelia, your mouth is open and sound is coming from it. This is never good.

XANDER: No. (takes Cordelia aside) It's, see, we can't mention that stuff in front of other people, Buffy being the Slayer and all.

WILLOW: You haven't been talking about our little adventure all summer, have you?

CORDELIA: Are you nuts? Do you think I would tell people that I spent the whole evening with you? Besides, it was all so creepy. That Master guy? And all the screaming? I don't even like to think about it. (to Buffy) So your secret's safe with me.

BUFFY: Well, that works out great. You won't tell anyone that I'm the Slayer, and I won't tell anyone you're a moron. (leaves)

XANDER: Now, that was a good insult.

WILLOW: A little too good.

Hi All,

Over the next week or so I'll be doing an overhaul of the Herald's reading journal, [livejournal.com profile] sd_herald. I'm adding some people who weren't on it, and I'm culling some people who have either stopped posting, gone friends only, or moved on to other fandoms. If you are one of the latter, and want to be added back because you're going to post something BtVS/AtS-related ANY DAY NOW, just drop me a note.

Also, I am interested in adding RSS feeds for fanfic archives. If you have a fanfic archive (especially if it's a rare character or pairing archive) with an RSS feed, I would love to get a link. THanks!

ETA: We've received several responses - thank you, everyone! It will probably take a couple of days to get everyone up to speed, but I'm hoping to be able to get back to a regular schedule next week!

Hi Everyone,

As you may have noticed, the Sunnydale Herald has been under-staffed for quite awhile. To make a long story short, [livejournal.com profile] audela and I are the only current active editors. I’ve just been in contact with [livejournal.com profile] menomegirl, who is taking a hiatus from fandom due to a family emergency. She’s made me co-mod of the Herald for the duration. She will continue to do the Twitter posts, and once her personal situation has resolved, we hope to see her back.

Buffy fandom is smaller now than it was in the Herald’s heyday. But not so small that two people are capable of keeping up with everything it puts out on a daily basis. I’m not going to beat around the bush: [livejournal.com profile] audela and I cannot handle this job alone indefinitely.

We have several options:

  1. This heartfelt plea produces a slew of new editor applications. The Herald is back to full strength again, posting six days a week, and everyone is happy! Yay!
  2. This heartfelt plea produces one or two new editor applications. We drop down to a condensed posting schedule of three or four days a week. Everyone is a little happy but a little sad. Yay?
  3. This heartfelt plea produces bupkiss. Audela and I keep posting for a while, but inevitably we burn out, go mad, and rampage through LJ leaving a trail of 502 errors in our wake. The Herald shuts down. No more Herald. Everyone is sad, boo!

Obviously I’m rooting for Option 1, but I can work with Option 2. Putting together an edition of the Herald can take anywhere from one to three hours, depending on the number of links and the time since the last edition came out. The more people we have working on it, the less time it will take for any one editor.

So what are the requirements for being an editor?

  1. Be willing to read/skim anything, regardless of pairing, kink, or comma abuse. You do NOT have to link everything, but be willing to at least check it out. In the past we've gotten way more flak for leaving stuff out than putting stuff in.
  2. One night a week, sit down and go over the Herald’s reading list and/or your own friends list, looking for stories, vids, meta, or news articles relating to BtVS, AtS, or fandom in general. You can also check out AO3, Fanfiction.net or other outside archives if you like. Copy the links into the handy dandy template we will provide you with. Post that template to the Herald communities on Livejournal, Dreamwidth, and Buffyworld.com

The Herald’s been a part of Buffy fandom on Livejournal for a long time. I’d like to see it continue as a part of fandom for a long time to come. A smaller fandom means a smaller pool of potential volunteers, but I’m hoping that there are four people out there reading this who are willing to splash around in that pool. I’ll be honest, it's not a glamorous job, you don't get a lot of thanks, and it’s not for everyone. But if you’ve ever wanted to give something back to fandom, but are basically a lurker? This is the job for you.

If you're interested, please send me an email at rahirah at cox dot net, message me through LJ, or drop a comment onto this post. (Comments will be screened.)

Thanks, everybody.
