Spike and Dawn don’t talk about Guilt, but whenever they eat dinner together at the dining room table meant for so many more, they look at that empty chair and know that she’s there, laughing at them when they look away. Guilt creeps into their beds at night, cold fingers in the stomach and brain, hot, awful words pouring from her mouth to their ears. Guilt doesn’t speak in words but in thoughts, thoughts of jumping and of stopping the jump and of what should have happened and what could have happened and what you deserve and what she didn’t deserve.
