Without calling the station, Chris got out of the squad. The air lay hot and sticky all around him. Only then did he notice that the kid hadn't turned off the truck. With one hand, like he'd practiced after seeing it in a movie, he unsnapped the leather safety belt stretched over the handle of his gun. If the kid took off, well, he had to stop him somehow, didn't he? He stopped for a moment, letting go with a stream of tobacco juice spit on the blacktop, then gave the fender and wheels a quick look over as he walked forward. Vehicle was probably a '65. Gas tank was on the driver side. It wouldn't take even a luck shot for the thing to explode into a fireball of glory.

Chris's palm itched.
