And I used to think I ought to volunteer to be a "staffer" here - thank you for disabusing me of that notion! Coding, ugh. (It's taken me nearly a year just to be able to do those icon tables at 20in20 challenges without begging for help.)

The coding's all set up in the template, really -- you just have to figure out where to paste in the links. :D

Ha, that's what they told me about those icon tables - its easy, just insert the links!

What no one told me is that you delete one wrong character or space by accident and the whole thing goes KA-BLOOEY! At least now when I screw up I can figure out why pretty quickly.

I have a feeling that for certain people coding truly is easy-peasy.

Exactly!! One wrong move, and it all goes is-blooey! And if I didn't understand the code, it would be difficult to figure out how to fix the problem. So I learned the code. And for a non-techie like me, it took a while. But now I know, and the next time I post, it will be far less stressful. So now I know a little more about coding and I get a chance to contribute. Win win.

I certainly did not want to dissuade you from being in editor if you ever have a mind to. it's kind of fun. It gives me a whole different perspective on the fandom. If you can create your icon tables, you can do this.

I've learned enough to get by here but I don't "know code" by any means. Did you go to a site online to learn it or just talk to someone?

Oh you haven't! The thing I find most daunting is the idea of finding the materials and making the posts with all the link. It feels like just a short post on my own LJ takes forever to get right (damn my little brain); or is it less daunting than I think? It seems to me a single post here must take hours. Does su_herald have news feeds to find the stuff for you? But you still have to cull it.

I guess what I mean to say is, I'm curious how it actually works.

I wasn't meaning to imply I suddenly "learned code". But I learned the new codes I had not seen before. Like I knew how to code for italics and bold and for an LJ user. But I didn't know what some of the codes I saw on the template meant. Like starting and stopping a paragraph or creating a bulleted list. So yes, I looked it up online and listed all the codes and what they meant.

That's the easy part. First I go through my friends page and the communities I belong to. Then, the editors have set up a feed that picks up stuff from all over the net - fanfiction.net, dreamwidth, AoO, tumblr. It's very cool. Just go to sd_herald, then click on that journal's friends page. You will see the feed. It's great. And remember, you only have to collect links for one day.

So I go through my search and while I'm doing it, I copy the links and other info like the story title, pairing, username, etc. on an Excel schedule. Then when I'm done, I take the links and other info and plug it into the template. There wasn't much culling.

It's advertised as taking about two hours. Obviously it took me a bit longer at first, but I do think it can be done in two hours. I will work on figuring out the most efficient way, and answer that question later.
