About This Community

What is this?

This is The Sunnydale Herald, a fandom newsletter that posts every day with links from LiveJournal, Tumblr, Dreamwidth, AO3, Fanfiction.net, and the Web at large which are relevant to Buffy and Angel fans.

The purpose of this journal is:

a. Encourage fandom members to try out new pairings, explore new fics, participate in their community, and meet new people.
b. Increase the amount of feedback given to fics, vids, etc.
c. Increase awareness on issues, questions, polls, and commentary happening in the community.
d. Inform fandom members on various new events (such as communities)

Who runs this?

spuzz was the original creator of the Herald. menomegirl and rahirah have been editors in chief. Currently, thenewbuzwuzz manages it.

Who are the editors?

Your editors are burnhername (juanabaloo), double_dutchess, fancyflautist, fatalfae, nondenomifan, rahirah, thenewbuzwuzz, and veronyxk84. Additional people who help us with link-gathering on tumblr are listed in the description of sunnydale-digest.

Please note that this is a closed community: the only members are the editors. You can read The Sunnydale Herald by watching or friending the Livejournal or Dreamwidth communities, or following the Sunnydale Herald Tumblr.

The Editions: Basics

So how exactly does this work?

Each editor has a unique way of finding notable things to put up on each day. Either trolling through friend's lists and community lists or finding links from rec journals and news sources, or reading from the reading journal su_herald_reading. On tumblr, we gather links using the group blog sunnydale-digest, which sends links to su_herald_reading via RSS. When enough information is gathered and the editor deems the links suitable, it will be combined in a entry and posted.

When do you post?

Daily, excepting selected holidays. If necessary, posting days are sometimes combined. Times vary according to the editor who is posting.

Can I comment on entries?

Yes. You can post your opinion on the entries and corrections of course are always welcome. Also if need be, you have a interesting tidbit or news to post you can always comment on the most recent entry.

Why are the comments being screened?

For several reasons, one being that we want to encourage people to comment and rec themselves and screening might entail less embarrassment for the reccer if done so. Another is to keep the journal page clean and neat, and the third reason is to not make our reccing of a fic redundant if people can just read it in the comments.

I left a comment and no one responded to me. Did you ignore me?

We've had some issues recently with links submitted in LJ/DW comments being flagged as spam, and missed. If you don't receive a response within a couple of days, feel free to email thenewbuzwuzz@protonmail.com or (for link submission) use our tumblr submission box.

The Editions: Content

What are the criteria for links?

Fic, art, vids, meta, etc are all linked at the editors' discretion. We include all pairings, characters, and genres. We include all-human fics, crossovers, and fusions, so long as Buffyverse characters are involved. We do try to ensure that the stories and meta we link have good basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Please note however that we only post a selection of fanworks each day, not everything fandom produces.

What about self-promotion?

Self-promotion is fine. Comment with a link, or email us. As noted above, though, we can't guarantee to include everything.

What constitutes news and tidbits?

Updated fics, icon posts, new interesting discussions or memes, a small selection of fics, new groups or communities, news pertaining to the actual show, garnered from sites.

What does not constitute news and tidbits?

Gossip. We will not post any personal information from fandom members, nor will we post about fandom feuds.
AI-assisted work, unless it's exceptionally original compared to what we've seen before (for example, an entirely new format) or the human artist/author has modified the generated material in some creative and non-trivial way (for example, by using AI to create a background, which they then heavily modify by hand), or the post has sparked substantial discussion.

What if I put something under 'friend's only' and one of the editors is on my friend's list?

We will not link to anything posted under friendslock. We only post public links. Links to stories on forums which require registration are acceptable if the forum registration is open to all.

Who created the icons?

The current batch of icons were created by the editors who use them or by rahirah. The older icons were created by spuzz.

Who created the header?

shakensilence created the old header. chasingdemons created the new header.

Who created the layout?

The layout was created by minty_peach.

Can I signal boost you guys?

We love signal boosting. So feel free to advertise. One way to advertise is if you find something and are commenting on it, link back to the Herald.

Can I give you guys feedback?

Sure. We would love any feedback and opinions. Constructive criticism is welcome.

How To

How to Post a Rec

Double check to make sure your link hasn't been posted already. Make sure your link is relevant to the Buffy/Angel community at large. Meaning: is it fic, meta, icons, news etc...that has BtVS/AtS at the core? Relevant information should be included: title/number of icons/subject of meta/news, poster/author.

Submit a link to the Herald's Tumblr. Copy/paste your url into the comment space. THIS IS THE PREFERRED OPTION, as LJ and DW have upped their spam protection and links left in DW/LJ comments may get flagged as spam, so we might not notice them.

Post the link in a comment to one of the posts on LJ or DW. Copy/paste your url into the comment space. Leaving it in raw format (without a href-ing it) is the most helpful. All comments are screened. If we neither respond to the comment within 24 hours or so nor post your link in the next Herald issue, please try one of the other options.
