If you were thinking about submitting a fic to get on the Herald, read behind the cut...
We do not automatically accept fics. We read them first, if one of the editors does not like that fic they send it on to the other's for second opinions. You should expect to get constructive crit. You should not expect to automatically get your fic praised and loved. This journal and the editors are trying to give the readers the best quality of fandom information we can. It is of course our opinion, but it's three opinions, each with varying tastes and interests in the Buffy fandom. Bottom line is, we won't automatically accept your fic, but we will read it, and we will give crit on it, hopefully helpful crit that helps, and then you can resubmit it.
We aren't claiming to be the foremost judge of fics in the fandom, but Blue, Dody and I have been around for awhile, we know what makes a quality fic and what doesn't. If we don't think it's that great, then we aren't going to recommend the general fandom reads it. That's just the way this journal works. Otherwise we'd be over-run with things to rec, and it'd be too much for the three of us to handle.
So tips if you are a newbie:
1. Spell check and get a beta. If you are writing in a popular pairing advertise for a beta in some popular communities.
2. Don't take constructive crit like we are flaming you. It's constructive it's meant to help, we won't ever say your story sucks ass and you should be banned to the mountain top, but we will give you tips on what you could do better.
3. You can always submit twice. No big deal.
4. Don't get mad at the editors, we are just here for fun, we are not required to do anything or post everything. We are doing this because we want to.
5. Enjoy writing, don't get stressed, if you are getting stressed...well take a break and start over.
If you defriend this journal because of this policy, I'm sorry, but that's the way it's going to be. It's the only way this journal can run smoothly. Not to mention we'd loose our reputation for producing quality goods to the fandom if we posted every fic. If you do intend to flame, email me not the Herald at tomorrowismine_today @ yahoo.com.
