Her hand reaches out to touch the body, spread out on the table. It lingers in the air.

In her mind, she is armed with a stick of charcoal, deep gray, thin and brittle. She hesitates, then imagines drawing soft lines where table meets body meets sheet, careful with her movements. The strokes grow faster, darker and more intent, until the whole room has been drawn grey, leaving her mother lying empty in the middle.
